TENS vs EMS: What’s the Difference and How Can They Help Me Manage My Pain?

As our doctor here at Dunwoody Chiropractic Center works with you to create a treatment plan, the addition of electrical therapy may be recommended. This is because electrical therapy, especially when combined with chiropractic adjustments, can help to greatly reduce pain and even prevent future injury. There are two types of electrical therapy, TENS and EMS, and both aim to relieve pain through the application of electric currents to different parts of the body. But what is the difference between the two?

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a pain-relief technique that, as the name implies, uses electrical impulses to stimulate nerve endings. Electrodes are placed on the affected area and transmit low-voltage electrical signals to the body. While the TENS unit is on, these electrical impulses interfere with the way your nerves send pain signals, preventing them from reaching your brain. Think of it as a distraction– your mind is focusing on the electrical signals coming from the TENS unit and not on the pain signals coming from your nerves. TENS units also work to improve circulation and stimulate the production of endorphins, your body’s natural feel-good chemicals that help block pain and boost your mood.

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a similar technique, but rather than stimulating your nerve endings and temporarily blocking pain signals, this therapy aims to relieve pain by stimulating muscle contractions. Electrodes are also used but are instead focused on key muscle groups. The electrical signals from the EMS machine trigger repeated muscle contractions. This process aims to relieve pain by relaxing the muscle, reducing swelling and inflammation in the area, improving circulation, and preventing muscle atrophy. It is a great way to strengthen your muscles without the risk of muscle strain or injury, and stronger, healthier muscles are less susceptible to further injury in the future.

At Dunwoody Chiropractic Center, we utilize EMS to help patients suffering from pain associated with weak, tight, or spasming muscles. The spine is not made to support the weight of the body alone and relies on its surrounding muscles to maintain proper posture and ensure the proper functioning of the spinal structures. As the EMS treatments help your muscles grow stronger, your body will be able to retain the results of your chiropractic adjustments for longer. It is the perfect complement for almost anyone seeking pain relief at a chiropractic office.
