Herniated discs are a common cause of chronic pain in the lower back, shoulders, neck, arms, and legs, and they can also cause chronic headaches. As a top-rated chiropractor in Doraville, Chamblee, and surrounding areas, Dunwoody Chiropractic Center helps patients relieve the pain and inflammation associated with herniated discs, tailoring each treatment to the unique needs of the individual patient for optimal results and an improved quality of life.
What is a herniated disc?
Your spine comprises a series of bones or vertebrae, and between each pair of vertebrae is a spongy disc. These discs provide a cushion for your spine, protecting it from jolts and impacts and also helping the spine stay flexible. Sometimes, though, a disc can move out of its normal position and extend out beyond the edge of the vertebrae, pressing against the nerves and irritating them. In severe cases, the disc can become torn, releasing some of the gel-like substance it contains and increasing irritation around the nerves.
What causes discs to become herniated?
Disc herniation is most common after an impact injury like a slip-and-fall accident, a car accident or a sports accident, but herniations can also occur as a result of repetitive movements, like bending and lifting. Pregnancy can increase your risks of developing a herniated disc as your belly grows larger and your spine is pulled out of its normal alignment. Obesity and poor posture also increase your risks of having a herniated disc, and so can older age and a sedentary lifestyle.
What symptoms do herniated discs cause?
Herniated discs often cause pain and achiness around the damaged disc, but because the discs irritate and impinge on nerves, they can also cause symptoms anywhere along the nerve pathway. Depending on the location of the disc, you might experience:
- neck or shoulder pain
- pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs
- pain or numbness in the hips or buttocks
- chronic headaches
Without treatment, you can experience a loss of sensation and increasing weakness in the affected areas. Painful sensations can range from a dull aching to a sharp, shooting, electricity-like pain.
Why should I see a chiropractor for back pain?
Chiropractors are trained in techniques designed to improve spine health, and that includes issues that affect the discs. When you see a chiropractor for back pain, your treatment will begin with a hands-on evaluation to determine the source of your symptoms. Then a treatment plan will be tailored specifically for your needs. Most patients respond well to chiropractic adjustments to coax the discs back into their normal positions, relieving nerve impingement that causes pain. Other techniques like spinal decompression or therapeutic massage can also help relieve pain while promoting circulation and natural healing responses to help keep your spine healthy and prevent future disc problems.
